Short-term rental regulations updated, business licence applications now open
News Release
On Monday April 14, Council adopted several bylaw updates to align local short-term rental regulations with Provincial standards. The change means that the City is once again accepting business licence applications for short-term rentals.
Following extensive review of our short-term rental regulations and supported by a strong long-term rental vacancy rate, the City of Kelowna is updating short-term rental regulations to align with provincial rules. The new regulations will protect long-term rental availability, enhance enforcement, and reduce confusion for residents and visitors.
The regulations are consistent with Provincial legislation and allow short-term rentals in an operator’s principal residence for periods of less than 90 days. Rentals are also permitted in secondary suites or carriage houses for the first time in Kelowna.
Anyone looking to operate a short-term rental must obtain a business licence. Operators must also register their rentals with the Province to avoid additional penalties. Those wishing to apply for a licence are encouraged to do so online for quicker processing.
The update aims to balance community needs, support the local economy, and provide clarity on short-term rental operations in Kelowna. Licensing will help support proactive compliance and enforcement of short-term rental regulations, ensure that short-term accommodations are good neighbours, and maintain fairness among short-term accommodation providers.
