Kelowna named 2026 Memorial Cup host city

November 27, 2024

Kelowna was named the Host Community for the 2026 Memorial Cup by the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) on Wednesday.

The City worked in partnership with the Kelowna Rockets and the Memorial Cup Host Committee on the successful bid, a testament to the hard work, dedication and passion of all involved.

“Today’s announcement is an exciting moment for Kelowna,” said Mayor Tom Dyas. “This is more than just a hockey tournament – it’s an opportunity to showcase the very best of Kelowna to all of Canada. The Memorial Cup will bring economic benefits, create unforgettable experiences for members of our community, and highlight Kelowna as a hub for sports and entertainment on a national level.”

The City of Kelowna extends its gratitude to the CHL for entrusting Kelowna with this marquee event and commends the outstanding efforts of the other bidding communities – Lethbridge, Spokane, Brandon, and Medicine Hat.

The 2026 Memorial Cup marks a possible return to glory for Kelowna, which last hosted the tournament in 2004. That year, the Kelowna Rockets, led by Captain Josh Gorges, Shea Weber, and MVP goaltender Kelly Guard, claimed victory on home ice before a sold-out crowd.

The event joins a growing list of marquee events in Kelowna, including the Montana’s Brier and the Canadian Country Music Awards coming in 2025. These events will not only position Kelowna on the national stage but are also a chance to showcase the region’s unparalleled natural beauty, cultural vibrancy, and world-class amenities.

The economic impact of the Memorial Cup is expected to be significant, with increased tourism driving benefits for local businesses and the broader community.

"I want to congratulate the Kelowna Rockets and recognize the leadership of Bruce and Gavin Hamilton, all the members of the Memorial Cup Host Committee, and the committee co-chairs David Rush and Steve Thomson,” said Mayor Dyas. “Our collective enthusiasm for this partnership reflects our dedication to showcasing the best of what our city has to offer, while also contributing to the success of the CHL and a truly remarkable tournament.”

Kelowna is committed to providing an unparalleled experience for players, fans, and visitors. The City has already begun making significant investments in Prospera Place to ensure compliance with WHL and CHL standards.

These investments highlight Kelowna’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and the long-term legacy of hockey in the community.
