The City of Kelowna is planning to improve the intersection at Springfield Road and Dilworth Drive /Benvoulin Road.

Background

Improving intersections as traffic demand changes is an important part of keeping the City of Kelowna moving. The intersection at Springfield Road and Dilworth Drive is changing with increases in traffic, bus routes, new cycling networks, pedestrians, new developments and more. The City is planning for future improvements at this location to move people through this key node in our network with minimal time and risk.

The Springfield / Dilworth intersection is a critical junction that must consider and move various modes of travel with many competing demands. Some of these considerations are identified in the below graphic:


Work Done

Through 2022, the Transportation Department has been compiling and analyzing various data to inform intersection improvements at Springfield Road and Dilworth Drive:

  1. Existing Intersection Road Safety Audit
  2. Existing and future Intersection Capacity Analysis and Multi-Modal assessment

Current Status

The City of Kelowna is currently working to develop intersection layouts to resolve the issues identified. This intersection is complex with competing priorities such as road capacity improvements, road safety outcomes, limited road space available, future development, adjacent agricultural land,multi-modal transportation needs, change impacts to other intersections and much more. The City completes evaluations based on the Project's Guiding Principles:

  • Safety for all modes
  • Improve the person carrying capacity
  • All ages and abilities cycling connections
  • Transit priority
  • Balanced capacity improvements
