Patio program

Food and beverage operators can apply to the Consolidated Sidewalk Patio Program to use portions of the sidewalk or roadway in front of their places of business for patron seating. We review the program with the Downtown Kelowna Association with the intention of refining and enhancing it to meet the needs of restaurateurs and the community-at-large. 

Public Property Patios: 

There are three types of programs available for businesses wishing to use the public sidewalk for temporary, seasonal, or annual usage:

Sidewalk Seating & Retail Display (seasonal)

A sidewalk patio operated by a food/beverage or retail business utilizing the designated frontage zone directly fronting their business. 

Sidewalk Café Extension/Roadway Occupancy Permit (annual)

A sidewalk extension can be proposed in such cases where a food and beverage businesses (doesn’t apply to retail) wishes to provide a sidewalk patio using parallel or angled parking stalls. 

Temporary Bernard Roadway Patio & Retail Display

A patio on the Bernard Avenue roadway by a food/beverage or retail business utilizing the designated roadway fronting their business

As part of the application process, businesses' will be required to: 

  1. Review the Sidewalk Seating & Retail & Display Program Guidelines 
  2. Submit a complete Application Form (Schedule B) and a non-refundable application fee (Schedule A) for new applications. 
  3. Submit the following documents with your application: 
    1. Drawing Requirements
      1. 1:100 scale of the proposed patio and surrounding area, materials and supplies for installation, and description of signage intended for use.
    2. Consultation Process (Schedule C
      1. Not Required for Temporary Use Permit or Retail Display: Unless the intention is to expand into an adjacent Business Frontage. 
      2. Consult neighboring businesses and fill out corresponding information following the consultation requirements.

Temporary Parking Lot Dining Program

The Temporary Parking Lot Dining Program was created out of response to support businesses during the pandemic. The City of Kelowna is looking to support businesses who have been impacted by the pandemic by providing a simple, cost-effective and streamlined way to increase outdoor patio and retail areas on a temporary basis. These expanded outdoor areas will help businesses operate effectively while maintaining social distancing for their customers.
