Sidewalk Cafés
Two outdoor food and beverage programs are administered by the City of Kelowna under the provisions of the City’s Traffic Bylaw.
The Sidewalk Seating Program allows food and beverage operators to use portions of the sidewalk in front of their places of business for patron seating.
The Sidewalk Café Extension Program allows food and beverage operators to use portions of the road surface, principally decommissioned parking stalls, for the purpose of patron seating.
Both programs were initiated as a means to contribute visual interest and diversify activity on Kelowna’s streets. The programs, in addition to allowing restaurateurs to take advantage of Kelowna’s climate and to accommodate patrons who would like the option of sitting outdoors, are intended to help attract greater numbers of visitors to Downtown.
The programs are reviewed annually by the City in conjunction with the Downtown Kelowna Association (DKA) with the intention of refining and enhancing the programs to meet the needs of restaurateurs and the community-at-large.
Application packages for each program can be found below. Each package includes the terms and conditions that must be met under the respective programs. Questions regarding the programs and/or the application requirements can be directed to the City’s Urban Design Planner at 469-8605.
